“It is broken” can describe many conditions: one replaceable part has failed, the object works unpredictably, it no longer meets the user’s needs, or repair would create a safety concern. Identify the symptom, when it began, and whether the object can be used safely while deciding. For electrical, structural, medical, or other high-risk items, qualified assessment matters more than experimentation. A clear problem description prevents a cosmetic fault from being treated like total failure and prevents a serious fault from being minimized because the object still turns on.
Compare Full Costs
Repair cost includes parts, labor, travel, time without the item, and the chance that another worn part will soon fail. Replacement cost includes purchase, setup, accessories, learning, delivery, and responsible disposal of the old object. The cheapest immediate option may not be cheapest across the expected period of use. Ask for a written repair estimate when the amount matters, and check what is guaranteed. Avoid pretending that uncertain future life can be known exactly; use ranges and note the assumptions behind them.
Consider Fit and Future Use
An object can be repairable and still no longer suit its role. A repaired chair may remain the wrong height. An old device may not support a required service. Conversely, a familiar tool that fits well may be worth repairing even when a new basic version costs slightly less. Consider who uses the item, how often, and what changes are likely. Do not let past spending decide the future by itself. Money already spent cannot be recovered through a repair that no longer serves a real need.
Look for Reversible Steps
Before a major decision, try safe, low-cost checks: clean a filter according to its instructions, replace a normal consumable, confirm settings, or obtain a diagnosis. Do not open systems the manufacturer or a professional says should remain closed. If replacement seems likely, investigate whether the old item can be donated for parts, recycled through an appropriate program, or retained as a temporary backup. A reversible step buys information without committing immediately to the largest cost.
Record the Reason
For shared household or workplace items, write down what was decided and why. Include the fault, estimate, safety advice, expected use, and disposal plan. This prevents the same research from being repeated and helps future buyers notice patterns. Perhaps a cheap component fails regularly or a repair service has been reliable. The purpose is not to prove that one choice was objectively perfect. It is to make the trade-offs visible. A sound decision is one that uses the best available evidence, respects safety and actual needs, and remains understandable after the moment of frustration has passed.
