The Final Morning Song
During her morning commute, Clara often heard a musician playing guitar near the bus stop. He arrived before eight, played for about an hour, and packed his equipment when the street became busy. Clara did not know his name, but she recognized his red guitar case and the calm songs he repeated. One Tuesday, he left earlier than usual after receiving a phone call. As Clara’s bus approached, she noticed a black folder under the bench where he had been sitting.
More Than Loose Paper
Clara picked up the folder to protect it from people’s feet. A label on the front said “Jonas Reed, Evening Set,” but there was no phone number. She did not open the inside pages. The bus driver could not keep personal property, and Clara had an important morning meeting. She took the folder with her and called the city’s lost-property office after arriving at work. They could accept it later, but Clara worried that the words “Evening Set” meant Jonas needed it before the office reopened the next day.
Looking for a Safe Contact
At lunch, Clara returned to the bus stop and asked the cafe owner nearby whether she knew the musician. The owner knew Jonas by first name and had a number he had provided for event bookings. She did not give Clara the private number. Instead, she called him herself and explained that a commuter had found a folder. Jonas described the black cover, his full name, and a bent silver corner. All the details matched. He was practicing elsewhere and could meet Clara at the cafe after work.
The Evening Performance
Jonas arrived carrying the red guitar case. He explained that the folder contained the order of songs and notes for a small performance that evening. Copies of the music existed, but his handwritten changes did not. Clara returned the folder after he described one more detail inside its front pocket: a yellow card from the venue. Jonas offered her money, but she refused. The cafe owner suggested that he play one song instead, so he performed a short piece before leaving for his event.
A Label That Could Help
The next morning, Jonas was back at the bus stop. A new label on the folder included a work contact number. He thanked Clara again and said he had completed the evening performance without changing his plan at the last minute. Clara told him that the cafe owner had protected his privacy by making the first call herself. Jonas appreciated that detail. Finding the owner had required more effort than posting his name publicly, but the folder returned quickly without sharing private information with strangers. Clara still listened on her usual mornings.
