A Lamp That Blinked
Dara used a small desk lamp when she studied at night. One Friday, the light began to blink. She changed the bulb, but the problem continued. A new lamp was not in her budget that month. Then she saw a notice in her building: a free repair table would open at the community room on Saturday. People could bring one small household item.
Tools on the Table
On Saturday morning, Dara carried the lamp downstairs. A volunteer named Emil wrote her name on a card and asked what was wrong. Several safe tools lay on a long table. Emil first unplugged the lamp and checked the cable. The outside looked fine. He explained each step before touching anything, and Dara held a flashlight so he could see the base clearly.
A Loose Part
Inside the base, one small part was loose. Emil showed it to Dara but did not ask her to repair the electrical part herself. He tightened it with the correct tool and closed the base again. Then they moved to a testing area. Dara plugged in the lamp and turned it on. The light stayed steady, even when she moved the cable gently.
Helping the Next Person
While Emil completed the repair card, another neighbor arrived with a chair. One leg was loose, and the chair moved from side to side. Emil was still busy, so Dara helped the neighbor clean a space on the table. She found the sign-in sheet and offered a cup of water. She could not fix the chair, but she could make the wait easier.
Light for the Evening
Dara took the working lamp upstairs and placed it beside her books. She also took a small card with the date of the next repair table. That evening, the lamp stayed bright through her whole study session. Dara saved money, learned why careful checking mattered, and met two neighbors. The next month, she planned to volunteer at the welcome desk.
