Pots in the Way
Ken lived on the third floor of an apartment building. His neighbor Pilar loved growing herbs in small pots. Her kitchen window was narrow, so she placed six pots beside the stairs. The plants smelled fresh, but the stairway became difficult to use. People had to turn sideways when they carried shopping bags. One evening, Ken nearly touched a pot with his foot.
A Polite Conversation
Ken knocked on Pilar’s door. He explained that he liked the plants but worried about the narrow path. Pilar looked at the stairs and agreed. She had added the pots one at a time and had not noticed how much space they used. They decided not to move them immediately because it was dark. Instead, they measured the empty corner beside the mailboxes downstairs.
Building a Shelf
The next morning, Ken brought a low wooden shelf from his storage room. Pilar cleaned it and checked that it stood firmly. The building manager approved the new place because it did not block the entrance. Together, they carried the pots downstairs. They put taller plants on the bottom shelf and smaller herbs on top, where Pilar could reach them easily.
Names for the Herbs
Other neighbors stopped to look at the new garden corner. A child asked which leaves were mint. Pilar made simple name cards for every pot. Ken added a small watering list. Four neighbors wrote their names beside different days. Pilar still cared for the plants, but now she had help when she worked late or visited her sister for the weekend.
More Room for Everyone
The stairs were clear again, and carrying bags became easier. The garden also received more visitors near the mailboxes. People touched the mint, read the name cards, and talked while checking their post. Pilar gave Ken a few herbs for his soup. Their conversation had solved the safety problem without losing the plants. It also turned an unused corner into a friendly shared space.
