Grandfather’s Choice
It is Grandfather’s birthday. The family asks what he wants for dinner. He does not choose a big cake or an expensive meal. He asks for the warm vegetable soup that his mother made when he was young.
Everyone Has a Job
Nora washes the carrots. Her brother cuts potatoes with their father. Their mother puts water in a large pot. Grandfather sits at the table and tells them when to add the beans. The kitchen is busy and happy.
One More Taste
The soup cooks slowly. Grandfather tastes one spoonful. He asks for a little more salt. Nora adds it and stirs the pot. Soon the room smells like vegetables and warm bread. Everyone brings a bowl to the table.
A Simple Wish
The family sings before they eat. Grandfather closes his eyes and makes a wish. Then he tastes the soup again. “This is the right birthday dinner,” he says. Nora writes the simple recipe in her notebook for next year.
