Begin with the Place

Say hello and use something around you. At class, you can ask, “Is this seat free?” At work, you can say, “It is busy today.” A small comment about the shared place is easy to understand.

Ask One Open Question

Ask a question that needs more than yes or no. Try, “What are you studying?” or “How do you know the host?” Listen to the answer. You do not need to prepare many questions at once.

Share a Little Too

After the other person answers, share one related fact. You can say, “I am studying that too,” or “This is my first visit.” A conversation feels balanced when both people speak and listen.

End in a Friendly Way

A short conversation can end naturally. Say, “It was nice to meet you,” or “I need to go back to work.” Smile and use the person’s name if you remember it. A clear ending is kind, not rude.
