The Tinderbox at the City Gate

The Old Witch at the Gate

A soldier came to the city gate with an empty purse and a tired back. He had marched long and seen enough hardship to know that luck often passed him by. On the road, he met an old witch with muddy shoes and a sharp smile. She told him of a hollow tree and a hidden way beneath the earth, where he could find a chamber filled with coin and treasure. In return, she asked only that he bring her a tinderbox that stood near the center of the chamber. The soldier agreed at once, because hunger makes people brave and because treasure is a powerful promise. He climbed down through roots and stone until he reached the underground chamber, where three great dogs with eyes like cups watched over chests of copper, silver, and gold.

The Magic Tinderbox

The soldier was not foolish, only quick. He filled his pockets, then saw the tinderbox the witch had named. It looked plain enough, but when he touched it, the dogs stirred. He remembered the witch’s warning, seized the box, and hurried back through the dark passage. Outside, the witch asked for it with greedy hands. The soldier would not give it up, and in the struggle he kept the tinderbox for himself. He soon found that the object was no ordinary piece of wood and flint. When he struck it, one of the dogs from the chamber appeared to carry out his wishes. At first this seemed like a blessing. He had food, money, and comfort at last. Yet in the city, sudden fortune can draw eyes, and eyes can become trouble faster than a sword can flash.

Luck in the City

The soldier spent his new wealth with the care of a man who has not always had enough. He dressed well, walked proudly, and soon became a talk of the town. But he also grew careless. He used the magic tinderbox to get what he wanted too easily, and each wish made him more certain that nothing could touch him. Then came the city’s ruler, who wanted the box for himself and sent guards to seize it. The soldier was clever enough to escape, but not wise enough to trust luck forever. When the dogs began to answer the tinderbox’s call, they brought him power he had never earned. The city gates, once so grand, now seemed full of danger. People who smiled in daylight whispered in the dark, and the soldier learned that magic can solve one problem and create three more.

Power Has a Price

In the end, the soldier learned that a gift can be useful without being safe. He used the tinderbox to save himself, but he could not use it to make a good heart out of a bad one, or turn fear into trust. The old witch had offered treasure, but the real prize was judgment. He kept the box because it was his, yet he never again treated it like a toy. The strange chamber under the earth had changed his life, but it had also taught him a hard lesson: easy luck is often the quickest road to danger. In a city full of gates, towers, and hungry eyes, the soldier came to understand that real strength is not only taking what you want. It is knowing when to stop, when to think, and when to use power with care.
