The Seven Ravens on the Road Home

The Brothers Are Lost

There was once a father and mother who had seven sons. They were lively boys, quick to laugh and quick to run, and the house was never silent while they were near. Then a baby girl was born, small and weak, and the mother feared she would not live. The father, worried and tired, sent the boys to fetch water for the child. In their rush, they knocked the jug from one another’s hands, and the water was lost. The father cried out in anger, and in that hard moment he wished that the boys would become ravens and fly away. At once, the wish came true. Seven black birds rose into the sky and vanished over the hills. The parents were left with one child, and the house was full of regret.

A Promise to Follow

Years passed. The little girl grew strong and kind, and one day she learned the truth of what had happened to her brothers. She did not blame her parents, but she could not forget the lost faces of the seven boys she had never known. At once she asked to leave home and look for them. Her parents tried to keep her near, but she had made up her mind. They gave her a token to carry, and she set out on a long journey across fields, forests, and cold roads. She asked travelers, shepherds, and old women if they had seen seven ravens together. Most shook their heads. Some laughed. Still she walked on, because love had made her brave and her promise was stronger than fear.

The Sun, the Moon, and the Stars

After many days, she reached a high path where the sky seemed very near. There she met the sun, the moon, and the stars, each shining in a different way. She begged them for help, and they took pity on her. The sun gave her a hot little branch, the moon gave her a silver key, and the stars gave her a crumb of bread. These gifts seemed strange, but she carried them carefully, trusting that they had been given for a reason. At last she came to a dark mountain with a door cut into the rock. The silver key opened it, and inside she found a hidden way down into the earth. The path was narrow and cold, but she kept going, thinking only of her brothers and the family restoration she hoped to earn.

The Ravens Come Home

Deep below the mountain, she found a chamber where seven ravens sat in sorrow. They were her brothers at last, but they were trapped in bird form and did not know how to return. She spoke to them softly and told them she had come for them. When she laid the little bread from the stars before them, the ravens grew quiet and hopeful. The hidden way could not be broken by force, but love gave her patience. She waited, watched, and followed every sign until the curse began to loosen. One by one, the ravens changed back into her brothers. They were pale and thin, but they were alive. Together they climbed out of the mountain and walked home with her. In the end, the house that had once known grief was filled with voices again, and the family stood together at last.
