The Empty Pot in the Palace Garden
A young boy goes to the palace with an empty pot and learns that honesty matters more than pretty flowers.
Original retelling inspired by the Chinese folktale of The Empty Pot.

The Emperor's Test
Long ago, there was a wise emperor who had no son. He wanted to choose a child who would one day rule with a fair heart. One spring, he called all the children in the kingdom to the palace garden. He gave each child a pot and a single seed. Then he said, “Take this home. Care for it well. In one year, bring it back to me with the flower that grows from it.” The children were excited. They hurried home, dreaming of bright petals and praise. One small boy named Ping also took part. He planted his seed in good soil. Every day he watered it and watched the pot carefully. But nothing happened. Not even a tiny green shoot appeared. Soon Ping began to worry that his seed would be one of the seeds that do not grow.
A Year of Waiting
Ping did not give up right away. He moved the pot to sunlight. He added more water. He talked to it softly, hoping the seed might wake up. Weeks passed, then months. Still the soil stayed empty. At school, the other children laughed and boasted about their plants. Some said their flowers were tall and red. Some said theirs were blue and gold. Ping felt small and ashamed. He thought about filling his pot with another plant, but he could not do it. His father had told him that an honest heart is worth more than a clever trick. So Ping waited. When the day finally came, he carried the empty pot into the palace garden with trembling hands. Around him, the other children held pots full of beautiful flowers. Ping looked down, ready to be laughed at.
The Honest Answer
The emperor walked through the garden and stopped in front of each child. He smiled at the bright flowers, but when he came to Ping, he saw the empty pot. The boy’s face grew hot with shame. “Why did you bring this?” the emperor asked. Ping swallowed hard and gave the honest answer. “I planted the seed you gave me, Your Majesty. I cared for it every day. But it never grew.” The garden became silent. Some children stared at Ping. Others lowered their eyes. Then the emperor raised his hand and smiled. “Children,” he said, “I gave you all boiled seeds. No flower could grow from them.” He had wanted to test who would speak the truth. The other children had changed their pots, but Ping had not lied.
A Better Prize
The emperor turned to Ping and said, “You alone were brave enough to come with truth in your hands.” Then he placed a hand on the boy’s shoulder and chose him as the future ruler. Ping was not the richest child in the palace garden, and he had not brought the most beautiful flower. But he had brought something far better. He had brought honesty. On the way home, Ping felt light, as if the empty pot had become full at last. He knew he would always remember that day. A person may lose a contest, fail a task, or come back with nothing to show. But if that person tells the truth, there is still a way to win respect. And sometimes, the empty pot is the strongest proof of all.
