The Bremen Musicians and the House in the Woods
Four tired animals leave their old lives behind, join forces, and find a safe new home in a forest house.
Original retelling inspired by the Brothers Grimm tale The Town Musicians of Bremen.

Old and Unwanted
There once were four old animals who were tired of being treated as useless. A donkey had carried heavy loads for many years, but now his back ached. A dog had chased rabbits and guarded the yard, but his teeth were weak. A cat could no longer catch mice as well as before, and a rooster was told that his crow was no longer loud enough. Each one thought about the future and found it empty. So the donkey said, “Why should we stay where no one wants us?” The others agreed. They decided to go to Bremen and become musicians. It was a strange plan, but it gave them hope. Together they set off down the road, four old animals with tired feet and a new dream.
A Road That Changed
The road was long, and night began to fall before they reached the city. The animals were hungry and sore, so they looked for a place to rest. Soon they found a light in the woods. It came from a forest house hidden among the trees. The animals peered through the window and saw robbers eating supper. The table was full of food, and the room was warm. “That house will do,” whispered the donkey. The others nodded. None of them was strong alone, but together they could make a plan. The donkey stood on the dog’s back, the dog climbed on the cat, the cat climbed on the donkey, and the rooster flew to the top. They made themselves tall and strange in the dark.
Working Together
Then the four gave a great shout. They brayed, barked, meowed, and crowed all at once. The robbers heard the noise and saw the shadow of the animals in the window. They thought a monster had come to the house, and they ran into the forest as fast as they could. The old animals rushed inside, ate the supper, and made themselves comfortable. Later, one robber came back to see what had happened. The cat scratched him, the dog bit him, the donkey kicked him, and the rooster crowed so loudly that he fled in terror. After that, the robbers never returned. The animals laughed at their own courage. They had not reached Bremen at all, but they had found something better: a home where working together made them strong.
A Better Future
The donkey, the dog, the cat, and the rooster stayed in the forest house and lived there happily. They had started as old animals with no place to go. Now they had a warm room, shared food, and a friendship that made each day easier. Their story is cheerful because it reminds us that age does not end usefulness, and weakness does not mean failure. Sometimes a small group can do what one strong creature cannot. Sometimes a bold idea is enough to change a dark evening into a fresh beginning. The four never became famous musicians in Bremen, but they did become something just as fine. They became a team. And in the middle of the woods, in a house taken by courage, they found a future together.
