He followed it and found a tiny child sitting inside a shining bamboo stem. The child looked as if the moon itself had touched her skin. The old man lifted her gently and carried her home. He and his wife cared for her with joy, and soon their house, once quiet and plain, felt full of warmth. They believed the child had been sent to them by a kind spirit.
A Growing Child
The little girl grew faster than anyone had ever seen. In only a short time she became a beautiful young woman with bright eyes and a calm voice. The couple called her Kaguya-hime, the shining princess. Many people heard about her beauty and came to ask for her hand in marriage. Rich men and noble guests brought gifts and made promises, but she was not impressed by wealth or titles. She asked each visitor to complete a difficult task, and each one failed. She seemed gentle, yet a sadness often lived behind her smile, as if she carried a secret from very far away.
A Message from the Moon
On clear nights, Kaguya-hime sometimes stood at the door and looked up at the moon for a long time. The old couple noticed her silence and felt uneasy. Then one evening a message from the moon arrived in the light of the full moon. It was not a loud voice or a thunderclap, only a sorrowful sign that she must return to the place she came from. Kaguya-hime told her foster parents the truth: she was not from the earth at all, but from the moon. She had lived with them for a little while, and now that time was ending. The old man and his wife held her close, knowing their quiet household would never be the same.
The Farewell
When the moon people came for her, the house grew still. Kaguya-hime left a letter and gifts for the kind couple, then placed one last soft look on the home where she had grown up.
